The limit describes the tendential behaviour of a function: where f(x)f(x) “goes” when xx approaches a point (or infinity), independently of the value the function takes at that point. By combining the two ways in which xx can tend (towards a finite number or towards infinity) and the two ways in which f(x)f(x) can tend, one obtains the four fundamental cases.
