Before measuring solids one must understand how lines and planes are arranged in space. The key concept is the perpendicularity of a line with respect to a plane: a simple criterion suffices (two lines, not all of them) to recognise it, and from it follows the theorem of the three perpendiculars, a fundamental tool for studying the heights and slant heights of solids.
