The intercept theorem is the bridge between geometry and proportions: a pencil of parallel lines “cuts” two transversals into proportional segments. We shall use it a great deal in the study of similarity. Alongside the figure of the theorem stands the story of its author, Thales of Miletus, and of the celebrated measurement of the height of the pyramid.
