An algebraic fraction is the ratio of two polynomials: as with numerical fractions, the denominator can never vanish. For this reason, before any calculation, one must determine the existence conditions, that is, the values of the variable that make the denominator zero and must be excluded. An example shows how, by recognising the special products hidden in the polynomials, the fraction simplifies in a surprising way.
